To Colonia and then....
12.08.2010
Hi!:
As a travelhelper, I hope this blog will encourage and help you to visit Uruguay. I'm from BA but I love Uy, the people, the way they take care of nature. A small country with a big heart!
There are several ways to cross the Rio de la Plata estuary. The typical way is crossing to Colonia and from there, take buses. Of course there are fast boats to reach Montevideo or Punta del Este, (see the map) but this trips ar expensive and are used by bussinessmen, so I think they don't need to read here...he..he...

The paths from BA to Uruguay
Two companies from BA leaves you in Colonia:
Buquebus (departure point: at the nort of Puerto Madero) have twice a day a slow boat wich takes 3hs. to cross. If you buy the one at night, ask for the reduction of price. Also there is a fast boat wich only takes 1 hr, and there are
at least 4 services a day (more in season). See more in www.buquebus.com.
The other company is Colonia Express (at the south of P. Madero). They have a small fast boat (1hr trip) and 5 different prices. The 2 cheapest are to buy only in Internet www.coloniaexpress.com)
Both companies offer a one day tour to Colonia from BA at a good price. Normally it includes a city tour and the lunch (One day is enough for colonia).
If you want to make a different journey and have no problems to wake up early, I use to reccomend to my guests to take in Tigre (very early, and you need to be 1 hr before) a ship that takes 3 hs to cross through the delta of islands.
This trip is wonderful, because you will navigate along many small rivers at the sunrise time, seing local houses so different than in mainland, and in a moment you enter in an wide area of water where 2 rivers joins and you can see different color of waters running along, with a almost well defined divisory line.... amazing!
Again there are 2 companies (Delta and Cacciola) and you have 2 arrival points: Nueva Palmira or Carmelo. Both are small typical towns of the uruguayan country you can visit in just a couple of hours, and from there to take a local bus to Colonia (around 1 hour trip).
In next entry I will follow with options from Colonia.
(and... excuse me for some mistake in my English)
